Festivals of the area - September
Fiestas
de Otoño (dates vary – starting from around 10
September):
Throughout September there is a range of
festivals in the Jerez area. This is the time of the annual
grape harvest in an area which historically lives on sherry
production.
These festivals are known in Jerez as the Fiestas de Otoño
(the Autumn Festivals) and include:
Fiestas de la Vendimia (13 September 2009 – dates
vary):
Celebrating the grape harvest this fiesta includes a beautiful
procession through the streets, culminating in blessing the
harvest on the steps of the cathedral and symbolic treading
of the grapes.
Virgin de la Merced (24 September):
The patron saint of Jerez is celebrated in a series of charming
and authentic processions around the town.
Bulerias Festival (dates vary, but is on a Saturday night
around 10 September):
This celebration of the Flamenco guitar, song and dance form
called La Buleria is considered by many to be pure Jerez Flamenco
at it’s finest. With audiences of up to 7,000 this is
very much a local occasion where good spirits overflow and
there is as much Flamenco in the audience as on the stage!
Noches en los Jardines del Real Alcazar (first week of September):
This series of music concerts, some classical, some contemporary
music is held in the beautiful gardens of the royal palace
in Sevilla. These concerts run every night for the first week
of September.
Feria de San Miguel (27 – 28 September 2009):
This is the final Feria of the season and takes place in
the mountain town of Arcos de la Frontera (20 minutes drive
from Jerez) with all the usual Feria attractions.
Don’t forget that there’ll also be
a range of special art events and exhibitions, classical concerts
and operas, dance shows and top sporting events to see during
this month. Contact Camino Holidays for details.
